Do you want to bring your family or dependent relative to live with you in the Netherlands? Then you are in the right place because in this blog and video, we are going to go through the requirement for Visa application for a family member.

A resident permit is required when you want your family member to live with you for more than 90 days in the Netherlands. Depending on your own resident status, different conditions apply. Make sure you read to the end as I will also be sharing the documents required for this process.

TWO CATEGORIES FOR DEPENDENT RELATIVE

First, let’s look at who qualifies as a dependent relative for the Dutch Immigration Service. The focus on dependent relatives are on two categories of persons.

  • CHILDREN UNDER 18
  • YOUR SPOUSE

One category is minor children under the age of 18, and the second category is your spouse, registered partner or a married partner, but with exclusive, longstanding relationship. If you’re coming to the Netherlands with a work visa, it is usually convenient that your employer submit application for yourself and your dependent relatives at once. This way, the application process is coordinated by your employer. It is faster and easier for you and as someone on a work visa, your partner is also allowed to work just as yourself when you arrive in the Netherlands.

If you’re coming to the Netherlands as an international student and understood the visa, then your university will be the one to apply for your visa. The university is only responsible for your visa. They are not responsible for the visa of your dependent relatives. However, you can discuss with the university to see if they can assist you by combining the Visa application with that of your dependent relatives, you’ll be the sponsor for your dependent relatives. You’ll also need to show evidence that you have sufficient funds in your bank account to cater for your education and also take care of yourself and your dependent relatives. It might also be that your university does not offer this extra assistance. Then you have to arrange for the Visa application for your dependent relatives by yourself. A lot of the time you have to wait until you have arrived in the Netherlands and settled down.

Then you can commence the process of applying for the visa for your dependent relatives. It’s important for you to know that when you are on a student visa, your dependent partner is not allowed to work. The third scenario is that you are already a Dutch citizen. You have obtained Dutch citizenship and now you want your family member to join you in the Netherlands. Under this scenario, it falls under family reunification and the conditions are slightly different. Your dependent relative 18 years and above have to first pass Dutch integration exam abroad. They have to have basic knowledge of the Dutch language and Dutch society. This will be tested in an exam and they’ll have to pass. You can only apply for their visa after they have passed this exam. Secondly, for your minor children, you also need to carry out D N A tests to prove the relationship between you and the children.

In the case of adoption of foster parents, the conditions are different and you can find it on the website of the immigration service. The following are some of the documents you need when applying for Visa for your dependent relatives. One, you need to show proof of funds that you have sufficient funds or income to cater for your family for at least one year. Marriage certificates in case of married couple, declaration of a married status in case of a married partner, that certificate that is translated and legalized by the appropriate authority evidence that you have passed the Dutch civic integration exam abroad. If applicable to you documents to demonstrate you have legal rights to have parental custody of minor children. The documents have to be either in English, Dutch, German, or French. If this is not the case, they have to be translated and legalized. Legalization of documents.
